Sachin Tendulkar: ‘Didn’t want to break down in front of Yuvraj’

Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar said, that he was scared of breaking down in front of Yuvraj Singh when he met the left-handed batsman in London after his treatment in the United States for a rare germ cell cancer.

Sachin Tendulkar said, ”When I went to meet him in London, I was telling my wife that I don’t want to break down when I see him. I met him and gave him a tight hug. We enjoyed a meal, and from the way he ate I was convinced that he was back on track”.

“When I saw my wife discussing medical terms with Yuvraj, I realised what he had been going through. He is like my younger brother and I would ask God why it (the illness) had to happen to Yuvraj”.

Yuvraj Singh recollected his first meeting with Tendulkar. “My first conversation was when I was looking at him in awe at the dressing room, suddenly he said, ‘please pass on the biscuits”. ” To this Tendulkar replied, “I have not got those biscuits till now”.

Apart from Sachin, India captain MS Dhoni also spoke about Yuvraj’s fight with cancer.

MS Dhoni said, he knew about Yuvraj’s situation even before he was told about it. “When his test reports came, someone told me he has cancer. I just said ‘are you sure?’ The person repeated that Yuvraj has cancer. I was shocked”.

Following his return from the United States after his treatment for mediastinal seminoma, Yuvraj set up a cancer charity called Youwecan, which focuses on spreading cancer awareness and early detection.

Several players who spoke at the event in conversation with Yuvraj and Harsha Bhogle said they had seen Yuvraj cough and throw up repeatedly during the 2011 World Cup, but assumed they were throat or stomach problems. Yuvraj was named Player of the Tournament for the World Cup and described the moment after Dhoni hit a six to win the final for India.

“I was running towards Mahi to hug him and he was running towards the stumps.” Dhoni had said he’d made a run for the stumps because otherwise the rest of the players would make a grab for them.

During his stay in Indianapolis for cancer treatment, Yuvraj said he had followed India’s matches in Australia and admitted to feeling “sad” at not being involved.

“I would watch videos of my batting until one day Anil Kumble came to visit me and shut my laptop. He said I should forget about cricket and concentrate on my recovery”.

The only time Yuvraj found himself “jumping” with excitement and joy during two difficult months of chemotherapy was on hearing about Virat Kohli’s century in Adelaide.

The India team and support staff were called onto the stage for photographs, but as the players went up Virender Sehwag stayed seated. Yuvraj called out to him and said, “Veeru, main bhi team main nahin noon, tum bhi team main nahin ho – chal aa jaa [I'm also not in the (Test) team, you're also not in the team - come on up].” Sehwag did with a smile on his face.

India and Pakistan to play ODI series in December?

Breaking News: India and Pakistan may play cricket again after five years. The cricket boards of the two countries have agreed in principal to play three One Day International (ODI) matches in December this year and the BCCI says, only the approval of the Indian government is now needed.

The ODI series, if it’s on, will be played during the Christmas break and in India. Mohali, New Delhi and Dharamsala are the venues tentatively picked.

India has a packed cricket schedule this year and the India vsPakistan matches will be accommodated in the middle of England tour to India. England will finish the Tests series and the team will fly back for Christmas. They will be back in the New Year to play ODIs.

An India vs Pakistan encounter on the cricket field will be miraculously for fans, the two countries last played a Test and ODI series way back in 2007.
The Mumbai terror attacks of 2008 plunging bilateral ties between the two countries to an all-time low. Cricket suffered. India were scheduled to tour Pakistan in January 2009, but most players said they were reluctant to go.

The Sri Lanka stepped in and agreed to tour Pakistan instead, but a terror attack on the visiting team in Lahore on March 3, 2009, saw an end to international cricket in Pakistan. Since then, no international team has toured Pakistan. Even World Cup 2011 matches scheduled to be played in Pakistan were shifted to other venues in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief has held several meetings with BCCI president N Srinivasan. Later this year, the BCCI has invited Pakistan’s domestic champion outfit the Sialkot Stallions to participate in the qualifying Tournament of Champions League Twenty20 to be held in South Africa later this year.

For the last five years, India and Pakistan have only played each other in multi-team series and in the famous semi-final of the 2010 World Cup when India defeated Pakistan at Mohali.

one year ago exactly today, India won the World Cup 2011. It was on April 2, 2011 that MS Dhoni sealed the game’s ultimate prize in favour of India with a huge six at the Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. It was an unforgettable day for the Indian cricket world.

The image of Dhoni winning the World Cup for India with a six will forever be etched in the memory of every Indian fan. The country’s wait for 28 years had ended on that night, resulting in celebrations across Mumbai and rest of India.

In a way it was Yuvraj Singh’s tournament for India. Yuvraj’s all-round performance (362 runs, 15 wickets), which won him the Man of the series award, revealed at the end of the tournament that he was playing the World Cup for a ‘very special person’ and that was none other than Sachin Tendulkar.

In the run-up to the tournament, most of the players were keen to win the World Cup for Tendulkar, who was without that medal after having played five tournaments before 2011. And finally, he had it one on April 2.

On a hot and humid day in Mumbai, on April 2, people queued up in thousands well before the match got under way at 2.30 PM IST.

It was a high security zone around the stadium and also inside. With only a capacity of 33,000, many were left disappointed failing to secure a ticket to the stadium.

Fans and journalists were frisked at multiple check points and spectators, including the media men, were not even allowed to take coins into the stadium. So tight was the security. The reason behind not letting coins into the stadium was those could be thrown onto the field in case of any untoward incident.

Once it was time for the coin toss, World Cup final got off to a controversial start. The toss had to be conducted twice. This will go down as the only time a toss was held two times.

It later emerged that match referee Jeff Crowe of New Zealand could not hear what Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara’s call was, as the crowd was too noisy.

Sangakkara claimed he had won the toss at the first instance but as luck would have it, it went in his favour again.

India took to the field and what an exceptional bowling and fielding start it was. Zaheer Khan, who sprayed the ball all round in his first over of the 2003 World Cup final against Australia, buried those memories with a maiden-over start.

Zaheer set the tone for India with three successive maidens. His opening burst read 5-3-6-1. Sri Lanka openers were strangled for runs.

It was only towards the middle and end of the innings that Sri Lanka accelerated and got to 274/6. Mahela Jayawardene crafted one of the best hundreds in a World Cup final. He was unbeaten on 103. Left-hander Thisara Perera played a cameo of 22 not out off 9 balls with 3 fours and a six.

If India had to win that final, they had to rewrite history. Never has been 275 chased by any team in the title decider. But that day it was time for India to achieve a first and they did it.

Virender Sehwag was nailed early by Lasith Maliga for a duck and Tendulkar disappointed his home fans for just 18. A nervous beginning for the hosts. But those were settled soon by the rest of the batsmen who followed.

Gautam Gambhir top scored with 97, Virat Kohli made 35. Captain Dhoni was unconquered on 91 with Yuvraj at the other end on 21.

As Dhoni deposited Nuwan Kulasekara’s delivery in the 49th over high into the stands, the dressing room, crowd and the millions across the country erupted in joy.

It was party time on the streets of Mumbai. Young and the old danced, few on top of their cars, traffic came to a halt in the middle of the night! It continued into the morning. An experience worth cherishing for the rest of our lives.

Here, let us look back how India’s journey started before culminating in Mumbai on April 2.

India’s historic trip towards that glory began in Bangalore with a preparatory camp at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. After having put in place all their plans, India began with a warm-up game against Australia at Chinnaswamy Stadium on February 13.

Australia, were spun towards defeat in the warm-up game by young legpspinner Piyush Chawla. From there on India lost only one game before succeeding in the final.

Probably, the biggest game of World Cup was the semi-final between Dhoni’s men and Pakistan in Mohali. It was on March 30, the arch rivals clashed and India sent Pakistan home in a high voltage match witnessed by many political heavyweights including both countries’ Prime Ministers.

Prior to the semi-final, India were heading towards the exit door in the quarter-final against Australia. But Suresh Raina, walking in at 187/5, chasing 261, turned the match around in the company of Yuvraj.

India got their campaign off to a winning start in Dhaka on February 19. They swept past Bangladesh with Virender Sehwag and Virat Kohli scoring centuries.

Barring that opener, India enjoyed home conditions right through the tournament, which was a big advantage.

After Bangladesh, India tied with England in a high-scoring thriller in Bangalore. Then had an easy opponents in Ireland at the same venue before going on to defeat Netherlands.

India’s only blemish in World Cup glory was the close loss to South Africa in Nagpur when Tendulkar reached his 99th international ton.

The Men In Blue crushed West Indies in Chennai to complete their league assignments. That set up a last-eight meeting with Australia. From there, India went to Mohali and Mumbai to complete the country’s second ever World Cup title after 1983.

It’s time to wish the World Champions, Happy First Anniversary.

Shane Watson 185 not out against Bangladesh, hit 15 sixes and 15 fours in his inning.

On 30 March 2011, Watson was named test and ODI vice-captain. On 11 April 2011 he made 185 not out off 96 balls against Bangladesh. Watson hit 15 sixes in this innings, breaking the record previously held by Xavier Marshall. He also scored the highest one day international score by an Australian batsman passingMatthew Hayden’s score of 181 not out set in 2007.

Shane Robert Watson born 17 June 1981 is an Australian cricketer. He is a right-handed batsman and a right-handed fast medium bowler. He mainly bats as an opener in international cricket, although he does not do so domestically.

At last, as per the ICC Future Tours Programme, India and Pakistan are scheduled to play each other in the month of March-April, 2012. This will give hope to the cricket fans to enjoy the live action between the two south asian rivals. Both rivals haven’t played a full series after the deadly 2008 Mumbai attacks.

So, Pakistan are keen to visit India in 2012 to put an end to the stalemate over the reinstatement of bilateral cricket ties between the countries, PCB chairman, Zaka Ashraf, said.

“It is absolutely necessary for Pakistan and India to play bilateral matches and for this purpose, if required, we are even willing to send our team to India next year,” Ashraf said.

Pakistan tour India for a full series of Tests and one-day cricket matches next year, in what would be a breakthrough in relations that were hit by the deadly 2008 Mumbai attacks.

India last played Pakistan in this year’s World Cup semi-final at Mohali, beating them in a keenly-watched encounter attended by the two countries’ prime ministers Manmohan Singh and Yousuf Raza Gilani.

India will host Pakistan for three Tests and five one-day internationals in March-April next year. Pakistan’s tour comes exactly after India comes back from its three-month tour to Australia.

Hope that India vs Pakistan 2012 match may be mark additional breakthrough in sporting relations between the two south asian rival countries.
