Basnahira Cricket Dundee player Rilee Rossouw who was hit on the nose by a Lasith Malinga SLPL match against Ruhuna Royals has received three stitches.

Basnahira Cricket Dundee spokesman Duleep Mendis, South African Rossouw was rushed to the hospital after being hit by a bouncer that travelled through the wiser of his headgear.

“He looks fine after being treated. Since all our first round games are over Rossouw will have time to rest and recover. He will probably return to South Africa in a couple of days”.

Rilee Rossouw played three mathes in the ongoing Sri Lanka Premier League competition and scored 20, 44 and 31 not out against Wayamba United, Uthura Rudras and Ruhuna Royals respectively.

Gayle, the icon player and captain for the Uva Next franchise, was among the marquee players for the tournament. Gayle had injured his groin while playing in the Bangladesh Premier League in February, but the injury was aggravated during West Indies’ second Test against New Zealand in Jamaica. The same injury had also prevented Gayle from playing in the MiWAY T20 Challenge in South Africa for the Dolphins franchise.

Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene said that although Kumar Sangakkara‘s injury was unfortunate, it was good in a way as it allowed Sangakkara an overdue break from cricket ahead of the World Twenty20 tournament in September. “He hasn’t had a break for nearly two years so if you look at it that way, it’s unfortunate but he gets a deserving break. Hopefully he will get fit for the World Cup  Jayawardene said.

“Sanga said that he had pain but he could bat through,” Jayawardene said. “He knew there was pain but it wasn’t really bad when you are in that situation. When [he is] batting in the middle he will bat through, but he did feel it so that’s probably why he didn’t go for big shots. I just told him to just bat through.”

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has denied Shakib Al Hasan permission to play in the Sri Lankan Premier League (SLPL) following an injury to his left knee. He will instead be given time to recover ahead of September’s World Twenty20.

“Shakib has been advised by the national team physio that he has to focus on rehabilitation of the injury in his left knee in the forthcoming period, during which he cannot play matches,” BCB media manager Rabeed Imam said. “This was also the suggestion of the BCB, that he gets some rest for now.”

Two other overseas players – Pakistan’s Abdur Rehman and West Indies’ Fidel Edwards – are also in the late withdrawals list that already includes Shakib Al Hasan, who was denied permission to play in the tournament by the Bangladesh Cricket Board last week. There is also speculation that Marlon Samuels will be unavailable, but this has not yet been confirmed.

It is understood that the WICB decided not to provide a “no objection certificate” for Edwards because they would like him to be fresh ahead of the World Twenty20, which begins in September. However, reasons for Rehman’s withdrawal remain unclear. Uva have replaced Gayle and Rehman with Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Fawad Alam and Jacob Oram and the Uthura Rudras have drafted in Kyle Mills and Australia batsman Rob Quiney to replace Shakib and Edwards.

Uthura Rudras spokesperson Dinesh Chopra said the loss of two overseas players days before the tournament had come as a surprise. “When we sat down and discussed strategy, we based our team selection on the basis of availability. One of the things that [coach] Tom Moody said was ‘There’s no point selecting fancy names if they’re not going to turn up’, so it’s not ideal.”

Shahid Afridi has described Indian Premier League (IPL) as the best foreign Twenty20 league that he has ever played.

Shahid Afridi, who will be playing in the Sri Lankan Premier League from August 12, said that his experience of playing in the IPL in 2008 had been the best of his career. Afridi was responding to a question at the Moin Khan academy about the mushrooming growth of foreign T20 leagues in which international stars are becoming a necessity.

Afridi who has been part of the T20 championships in India, Bangladesh, England and Australia said, his best experience came in the IPL.

“Although I played just once in the IPL but it is easily the biggest league you can play in and I enjoyed my experience. The IPL is clearly the best organised foreign league and it was a totally different experience playing in it”.

Pakistani players were part of the first edition of the IPL in 2008, but after the Mumbai terror attacks, the same year, franchises have not signed any Pakistani cricketer for the league. Afridi termed the absence of Pakistani cricketers from the IPL as disappointing and hoped things would change next year.

Shahid Afridi, who will represent Pakistan in the coming T20 series against Australia and in the ICC World Cup, also agreed that the growing number of foreign T20 leagues posed a challenge for traditional formats of the sport.

“Obviously as time passes and these foreign leagues grow, players are bound to find themselves in a position where they will have to take decisions about their careers”.”The foreign leagues presented a good opportunity for top players to earn decent money and that is why they were being attracted to these leagues”.

Shahid Afridi, who retired from the longer version of the sport in 2010 after leading his country in one off Test at the Lords against Australia, meanwhile pointed out that the Sri Lankan league posed a big challenge for him.

“We really don’t know much about it but it will definitely help the Pakistani players prepare themselves for the coming series against Australia and the T20 World Cup”. ”It should be a tough league but it will put us in the proper frame of mind for the coming assignments”.

The Pakistan cricket Board (PCB) has under an agreement with the Sri Lankan Board allowed its players to take part in the league.

Kumar Sangakkara who was appointed captain of the Kandurata Warriors team in the inaugural Sri Lanka Premier League Tournament set to start on the 11th of August effected an injury in the 3rd ODI against India and has been ruled out of cricket for 6 weeks.

Former Sri Lankan Captain and opening batsmen and Member of Parliament Sanath Jayasuriya is tipped to be appointed as captain to lead the Kandurata team.

Sanath Jayasuriya who captained the Sri Lanka national cricket team from 1999 to 2003 retired from all forms of International cricket in June 2011.

Jayasuriya is the only player who has scored more than 13000 runs and captured more than 300 wickets in the limited over matches and is considered one of the best all rounders in the history of international cricket and also a game changer in the limited over format.

The Kandurata team management is yet to officially announce the new captain and with the tournament set to begin in less than 15 days, quick decision needs to be made.

The SLC is hosting the Sri Lanka Premier League next month and several national as well as international cricketers have been selected to take part in the tournament.

Mahela Jayawardene said, the contract issue is being discussed with the cricket board. The players hope the issue will be resolved within the next few days and will sign the SLPL contract only after that issue is settled.

The national cricketers have an issue over the payments offered by the Sri Lanka Cricket Board for the contracted players. The board recently announced the categories under which the national players will be offered contracts.

Upali Dharmadasari president of SLC insisted that the issue over the national team contracts will be resolved before the end of this month. The discussions with the players and there was no issue despite the delay in getting the players to agree to the terms and conditions in the national contracts.

The Sri Lanka Premier League will be held next month and the 21-day event will see several international players taking part alongside local players. India will not take part in the tournament as a result of restrictions imposed by the Indian cricket board.

Mahela Jayawardene said, that the event will help young Sri Lankan cricketers to develop their match by playing alongside international players.
