Ricky Ponting has been a great man, a great cricketer and a great captain. My career would not have taken the path it has if it weren’t for him. He has been my hero, my mentor and my friend.

From him, I have learnt how to encourage new talent (eventually); how to support struggling talent (unless they are named Hauritz); how to celebrate victory with honour and grace (oh, no that may have been Steve Waugh …) and how to use tactics to get the best possible result, even if it means taking a risk … (no, no,wait -  that was Mark Taylor).

Anyway, I’ve learnt stuff from Rick. Mostly what I’ve learnt is that there is something to be said for quitting while you’re ahead. Clinging on for dear life when your career is over is not a good look. I can promise you all that, unlke Rick, I won’t be doing it. Kyly says I’m not allowed.

So, at my retirement dinner in a couple of year’s time, when Rick gives the tribute speech and tries to steal back the captaincy, I urge you all to rugby tackle him to the ground. At the very least, you should injure him to the extent that he can’t play for a few weeks. His absence can only do the team good.

And then pray they don’t make Shane captain.
